Against The Grain

"What do you do?"

A question I've dreaded hearing since I left college in 2008. I didn't stay on in education to go to university, I spent some time unemployed and made my first attempt at starting up a business, taught myself enough html to piece together a semi functioning website, learnt to DIY screen print shirts & made jewellery inspired by Nu Rave and 8-Bit.

Needless to say it died a death along with Nu Rave. I retired the neon & went on to do a series of different jobs, with the underlying pressure of that question always on my shoulders. I felt like I needed a conventional career to justify my worth. So that I could answer with something other than "Oh I just work in a shop", which there is nothing wrong with at all, yet I was measuring my worth based on other peoples opinions.

So a few years and a few retail sales jobs later I went back to college and studied Fashion Retail. I was interested in Buying and Styling but had seen a lot of jobs advertised for Visual Merchandising and it seemed like something more attainable and something that resembled a career.

Long story short, I worked hard, was in the right place at the right time and ended up in VM for the best part of 3 years. I finally felt like I could answer the dreaded question without judgement. It was a well paid job with job perks and most importantly, career progression. I felt like I was on track and had purpose, or at least I felt like other people would think I was.

I am eternally grateful for every opportunity and every beautiful person I met during my time in VM. I've made some friends for life, had some great experiences, learnt a lot of new skills and learnt even more about myself. But for everything I gained in that time, I lost part of myself. The long hours, erratic and unpredictable shifts along with other factors reduced me to a bit of a retail robot. I've always been creative and loved making things and doing things but there was a long time where I did nothing, I barely even saw my friends and family because I was always so tired and just wanted to get home, eat and sleep ready for the next day.

But I didn't do anything about it. Because I had a good job, well paid and stable with career progression. Countless teary nights later and I finally realised something had to give. Working is on the whole a necessity, but I had to stop and look at what was important. If your job isn't something you love it shouldn't monopolise your life (and probably shouldn't even if it IS something you love, but that's up to you!). I'm not condoning doing something half hearted or just walking out of a job without finding something else first. If someone is paying you for your time, be respectful enough to give them what you signed up for & sometimes you have to stick out something that's not right for you because you're a responsible adult and you have bills to pay. But there are a lot of different jobs and if one is not giving you the balance you need or allowing you the time to focus on the things in life that make you happy, then it's time to look for something else, regardless of how good that job may be on paper.

All this came just in time for Christmas. I know I have made the right decision and I'm thoroughly enjoying the new job and the time it has given me and even still, I did feel the pressure when that question once again came up.  But this time I'm trying not to let other peoples perception and opinions define me and instead use my newly acquired time and energy to do the things that I'm excited to tell people about, when they ask me what I'm doing with my life.

Peace out. xo

The Hendersons

I sometimes take for granted how much there actually is going on in the little town I live in. Growing up I think I always had a bad case of 'grass is greener', especially living so close to London, but as I get older I've started to notice that there's some really exciting, beautiful and inspiring little gems right on my doorstep.
One little gem I'm very excited about is a little shop on Rochester High Street called The Hendersons.

SALE ALERT: Schuh

Schuh Sale

There's some amazing stuff in the sale at Schuh at the moment. Some are still a little out of my price range but definitely ones to keep an eye on incase they get reduced further.
My favourites have to be the patent white creepers with the chain - they remind me of 90s school shoes & the Lazy Oaf Kickers that I just couldn't justify spending £110 on, but now they're less than half price, I might treat myself next pay day!

There's a lot more from Red or Dead & Dr Martens and lots of Jeffrey Campbell shoes in the sale at Office so go check that out too!

Hat - ASOS, earrings - Forever 21, blazer & dress - gifts, shoes - Dr Martens

So, I've kept quiet about it for a while 'cause I wanted to see how things went, but I had an interview a couple of weeks ago at Forever 21 for Visual Merchandiser! I've been working there as sales associate since last November and after finishing the Fashion Retail course I was on, I've been looking for a VM position but didn't want to leave the company, so this was a perfect opportunity.

I start my training soon and I'm so excited about joining the team. I've just got to make it through my probation period, so fingers crossed!

Dress - hand me down from my Mum, boots - Office

I miss my blue hair & I'm not wearing any make up cause I feel like poop but my new style muse is Mathilda from Léon <3 (extended post on this soon).

Sorry for the lack of posts recently! Between work & not having a lot of money, I haven't been going out very much so I've spent a lot of time watching Breaking Bad (!!!), sleeping, salvaging furniture & baking cakes.

Poop cakes

110g/4oz butter or margarine, softened at room temperature
110g/4oz caster sugar
2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten
110g/4oz self-raising flour
1-2 tbsp milk
Ferrero Rocher chopped/crushed
8 squares of Galaxy (or whatever) chopped
2 tbsp Nutella

For the buttercream:
Icing Sugar
Butter
Water
Nutella

✿ Preheat oven to gas mark 4/180°C & line a baking tray with paper cases.

✿ Cream together butter & sugar, beat in the eggs & mix in the Nutella.

✿ Fold in the flour and add the milk. Mix until everything is mixed and at a soft consistency, kinda like slightly melted ice cream.

✿ Spoon the mixture in to the cases filling them about half way.

✿ Bake for 8-10 minutes (poke with a skewer to check if they're done - if they are it should come out clean)

✿ Once the cakes are done, leave them to cool.

✿ To make the buttercream we mixed icing sugar and butter as per the box instructions with a little water and then mixed in a couple of spoonfuls of Nutella.

✿ Spoon the buttercream in to a sandwich bag and snip off the corner to make a DIY icing bag then starting from the outside, pipe on to the top of the cakes in a spiral, finishing in the middle with a little peak.

I made these for my Mum's Birthday and I hadn't planned for them to come out how they did, but luckily she has the same sense of humour I do and they were totally yummy too, so she loved them anyway. Recipe adapted from this one I found on the BBC site here.

Heres a little summary of my month in Instagram photos:

Forever commuting, best cider <3, cute little seaside trip

EVENT: Rochester Flea

Last weekend I went along to the Rochester Flea market at the Gordon Hotel. There used to be a regular flea market under an old car wash in Rochester which stopped running a  good 10 years ago, before I really gained my love for rifling through old treasures, so I was really excited to hear something new had been organised.

The first of a monthly event saw a beautiful collection of artists, vintage clothing, home ware, records and bric-a-brac. There was even a little retro gaming area courtesy of CoFWD and a food stall run by the most amazing lady who was singing to try and entice people to buy chips and reminded me so much of my Grandma.

I didn't have a lot of money to spend but bought a couple of things and also had a good look around the charity shops too.

You can see a list of all the artists and stallholders here

ART: Wishcandy

Every now & then I'll stumble upon an artist who's magical alternate universe makes me wish I was a two dimensional character, and boy would I love to be a Wishcandy girl.

Inspired by "retro culture, street fashion, kitsch, beauty, and the grotesque", Wishcandy is the creation of Sashiko Yuen.

Sashiko describes her work as a 'sassy candy coated horror show', the girls she draws look like modern versions of B Movie babes with pastel hair, rad tattoos and clothes that I find myself constantly lusting after.
And with collections titled 'Rebel Grrrls' and 'Food Erotica' and her girl gang of characters including Enid Coleslaw & Sailor Moon, Wishcandy is a girl after my own heart.

'Comfort Queen'

'Not all is noble'

You can find more of her work on her WEBSITE, follow her on TUMBLR & BLOGSPOT and buy her beautiful work as prints or pins from her ETSY

Black bobble hat - New Look, polka dot bodysuit - Forever 21, jeans - Levis, Shoes - Dr Martens

The blue is gone (mostly) I kinda miss it already :( I've left the ends blue but it needs a trim so they probably wont survive the chop. I'm so terrible with dying my hair, I get bored too quickly!

I started working at Cybercandy again last week! Rob came up to meet me after work one day and we went to get burritos from Chipotle 'cause I've been wanting to go there for ages. They were so good. And gigantic.

FILM: Fight Club

Marla Singer is the only female character in Fight Club the film and one of only two in the book. Filled with despair and self loathing, Marla is a key character.
Marla shouts to the police that the girl who lives in 8G used to be a lovely charming girl, but the girl is a monster bitch monster. The girl is infectious human waste, and she's confused and afraid to commit to the wrong thing so she won't commit to anything.'The Girl in 8G has no faith in herself,' Marla shouts, 'and she's worried that as she grows older, she'll have fewer and fewer options.'
There's an interesting write up on Marla's role in the book/film here. Her clothing in the film is really reflective of her personality and character, seen in one scene stealing clothes from a laundromat & taking them next door to the thrift store to sell, she appears to steal or buy her clothes from thrift stores but has an incredibly strong and quirky sense of style to match her personality which softens slightly as she becomes seemingly more vulnerable.
"I got this dress at a thrift store for one dollar. It's a bridesmaid's dress. Someone loved it intensely for one day, and then tossed it. Like a Christmas tree. So special. Then, bam, it's on the side of the road. Tinsel still clinging to it. Like a sex crime victim. Underwear inside out. Bound with electrical tape."
I love her mix of classic black Audrey Hepburn-esque outfits, furs, sequins & delicate chiffon bridesmaid dresses with dark eyeliner and wild hair. The juxtaposition of girly, glamourous and lavish with grungey, goth & dark is something that has definitely had a lasting impression on how I dress.

I couldn't write a post about Fight Club without mentioning Tyler Durden. His eccentric outfits featuring loud shirts, fur coats, leather and patent loafers, again, representative of his character. My favourite outfit of his is this one near the end of the film:

Anyone else share my love of Marla Singer? She's definitely one of my all time favourite fictional babes.

Also, I've made a Facebook page! If you want to keep up to date with new posts, news and give aways, go check it out!
